Standard sofa dimensions, measured on 98 real sofas
A standard three-seat sofa is 88″ wide and 37″ deep — the median of 24 sofas in IKEA’s US range — with the seat 18″ off the floor. Widths run from 67″ to 104″, so the number that matters is your wall, not the average.
Most sizing guides repeat the same rounded range without saying where it came from. Every figure on this page is computed from the product pages themselves: 98 sofas, loveseats and sectionals, read one model at a time in October 2026. The full table is at the bottom.

Sofa sizes by type
Median and range for each kind of sofa, width being the long side. Depth is left out for chaise and corner pieces on purpose: IKEA lists it sometimes for the sofa part and sometimes for the chaise, so an average of the two would describe neither. For those, read both legs off the product page.

A sofa takes more floor than its depth
The median sofa is 37″ deep, but it never stands alone: there is a coffee table in front of it and a way past. Add the two gaps the trade works to and the sofa claims 89″ — 7 ft 5 in — of the room’s depth before anyone sits down.

Below fourteen you kick it, above eighteen you lean to reach your cup. We count the middle, 16.
The clear width of an accessible route in the 2010 ADA Standards, §403.5.1 — where every “leave three feet” rule comes from.
How to pick the size for your room
- Measure the wall, then take 36 inches off. Eighteen at each end leaves room for a side table or a path. What is left is the longest sofa that works.
- Measure the room’s depth from that wall. Subtract the sofa depth, the table gap and a walkway. If the answer is negative, the sofa is too deep, however long the wall is.
- Measure the way in. The narrowest door, hall or stair turn on the route has to be wider than the sofa’s depth or its height, whichever is smaller, because that is the side it goes through on.
Or check it on your own plan
A tape measure answers one sofa at a time. Decato answers the room: draw the plan or import the one you have, and it places real sofas from IKEA and Wayfair at their catalogue sizes, checks each against the walls, the door swings and the walkway, and drops the ones that do not clear.

Common questions
What are standard sofa dimensions?
Across the 24 three-seat sofas in IKEA’s US range, the median is 88″ wide (7 ft 4 in) and 37″ deep, with widths running from 67″ to 104″. (Checked October 2026.) “Standard” is a median, not a rule: there is no industry standard for sofa size, only what manufacturers converge on.
How long is a couch?
A three-seat couch is usually 67″ to 104″ long, and the middle of that range is 88″ — about 7 ft 4 in. Length is the number that varies most between models, which is why it is the one to measure against your wall before anything else.
What is the average depth of a sofa?
37″ for sofas and loveseats together, from 30″ on the shallowest to 43″ on the deepest. Depth decides more about a small room than width does, because it is taken out of the walkway in front.
What are standard loveseat dimensions?
The median loveseat in the range is 69″ wide and 37″ deep, across 23 models from 48″ to 85″ wide. It is narrower than a sofa by roughly one seat cushion and almost exactly as deep, so it saves wall length, not floor depth.
How big is a sectional?
Sectionals vary the most: 37 models from 76″ to 152″ across their longest side, with a median of 115″. A corner or chaise sectional has two depths, the seat run and the return, and listings do not agree on which one they print — so measure both walls it will touch and check both numbers on the product page.
What is a normal seat height for a sofa?
18″ from the floor to the top of the cushion is the median, and almost everything sits between 16″ and 21″. Lower reads as lounge furniture and is harder to get up from; higher suits a dining-height table nearby.
What size sofa fits a small apartment?
Start from the wall, not the sofa: take the wall length and leave at least 18 inches at each end for a side table or a path. On a 10-foot wall that leaves 84 inches, which fits most three-seat sofas in this range; on an 8-foot wall it leaves 60, which is loveseat territory (median 69″).
Are these all IKEA sofas?
Yes, and on purpose. Every row is read from an IKEA US product page, one colour per model, so every figure can be checked against a page you can open. We tried Wayfair too; it refused automated reads, and we would rather publish one retailer measured properly than a market average nobody can verify. (Checked October 2026.)
