Is Homestyler free?

Yes, and more of it is free than you would expect. The Basic plan has no time limit, unlimited projects, a library of over a million 3D models, and unlimited renders at 1K resolution. You can design a whole apartment without paying.

What you cannot do for free is show the result to anyone. Every render on Basic carries a Homestyler watermark, and anything above 1K is paid: a 2K render costs 9 coins, a 4K render 49 coins, bought one at a time. The AI features come with three credits in total, not per month.

The free plan is real; the trial is where people get caught

The one-star reviews are not about the free plan at all. They are about the paid trial that converts into a charge, and about how hard the cancellation is to find afterwards. Homestyler documents a cancel button in the subscription page, but three separate reviewers say they could not find it and went to their bank instead.

If you only ever use Basic, none of this touches you. It matters the moment you tap a discount to try Pro+.

if you sign up for the free trail...you are then charged. No invoice is sent and it is IMPOSSIBLE to cancel.

There is nowhere on their website to cancel. They make you go through the trouble of calling your bank.
Trustpilot · 1★ · March 2026

The company's own FAQ says renewals are cancelled from Workspace → My Subscription → Cancel Auto Renew, and that fees are non-refundable once paid. Read that before taking the first-subscription discount, because the discount is what starts the auto-renewal.

The price on the page is already the discounted one

Homestyler shows "from $6.8 a month" next to a "save 15%" badge. That is the auto-renewal price for a first subscription, not a list price with a discount on top — and no annual figure is published at all. What you actually pay depends on the discount you are offered at checkout, so treat $6.8 as the floor, not the number.

Coins are the other currency, and they run out

On Basic, a 4K render is 49 coins and a 2K render 9 coins. Homestyler hands out coins for daily log-ins and platform tasks, which is enough for a render or two — not for a project. If you need several high-resolution images, Pro+ at 75 renders a month is the cheaper way to buy them.

What people who used it say

From 11 reviews on Trustpilot averaging 2.9 and 6 on Capterra averaging 4.8. The Trustpilot split is stark: three people gave five stars, five gave one, and almost nobody landed in between.

The praise is for the editor and the catalogue; the complaints split into two kinds. People who stayed free complain about nagging and performance. People who paid complain about billing. Almost nobody complains about the free plan being too small.

Who the free tier is enough for

Free is enough if

  • you want to design a room or a whole flat and look at it yourself
  • a watermark on the image does not matter for what you are doing
  • 1K resolution is enough, or one or two 4K renders paid by the coin will do
  • you are in a browser and do not want to install anything

You will hit the paywall if

  • the image is going to a client, a landlord or a listing
  • you need more than a couple of renders above 1K
  • you want to bring in your own textures or furniture models
  • you want the AI features for more than a single try

What else to look at

Sweet Home 3D
Fully free, open sourceNo watermark and no coins. Dated interface, small catalogue
Planner 5D
Free, about half the catalogueNo watermark on the free plan; renders and plan upload are paid
RoomSketcher
Free plan, watermarkedBetter floor plans; 3D output metered in credits even when you pay
Floorplanner
Free tier, paid exportsClosest in feel; the free plan limits what you can export
IKEA planners
FreeOnly IKEA products, but complete and ends in a cart

If the watermark is the only thing in your way, Planner 5D is the free plan that does not stamp its name on the picture. Homestyler has the bigger catalogue and the better renderer; the question is whether you need the image to be clean.

For the question on this page — can I design a room for free — Homestyler is a good answer and we are not. Its free plan is one of the most generous in the category.

Decato is for a different moment: when the furniture in the plan has to be real products you can order, with prices attached. You bring a plan you already have, and it matches in-stock pieces to the room, checks each one fits, and returns a priced list.

  • Planning is free on your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini key. Product matching and renders are paid, from $20 a month. (Checked September 2026.)
  • It is a Mac app today. Homestyler runs in a browser on anything; if you are on Windows or a tablet, this is not your tool yet.
  • It does not have a million-model catalogue to browse. It has real products that are in stock; if you want to decorate with anything imaginable, Homestyler is the better toy box.

Common questions

Does Homestyler put a watermark on free renders?

Yes. Every render on the Basic plan carries a Homestyler watermark; removing it is a Pro+ feature. The design itself, the projects and the catalogue are free (Checked September 2026).

How many renders can I make for free?

Unlimited at 1K resolution. Anything larger is paid by the coin on Basic — 9 coins for 2K and 49 for 4K — and coins are earned slowly through daily log-ins. Pro+ includes 75 renders a month at both 2K and 4K (Checked September 2026).

Do I get AI features on the free plan?

Three AI credits in total, not per month. That is enough to see what the AI tools do and not enough to use them. Pro+ gives 180 credits a month and Master+ 380.

Is there a yearly price?

Not on the pricing page. Homestyler shows "from $6.8 a month" with a "save 15%" auto-renewal discount and publishes no annual figure (Checked September 2026). The price you pay is set at checkout.

Why are the reviews so split?

The five-star reviews are about the editor and the catalogue. The one-star reviews are almost all about billing: a trial that converted to a charge and a cancel button people could not find. If you stay on Basic none of that applies; if you try a paid plan, read the subscription FAQ first.
