AI room design

AI room design, with furniture that fits

Most AI room design tools restyle a photo of your room. Decato starts from the floor plan instead, so every piece it picks is a real product you can order, checked against the walls, walkways and door swings before it is placed.

What is free
  • Generating and tracing plans, and laying out rooms, on your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini key
  • Editing walls, doors and dimensions by hand
  • Paid, from $20 a month: matching real products and photoreal renders

Three kinds of AI room design, and which one knows the room’s size

All of these are sold as AI room design. The difference between them is invisible in the picture and obvious the day the sofa arrives.

01

Restyle a photo of the room

You upload a photo of the room as it is and pick a style. The model repaints it: new sofa, new rug, new wall colour, in seconds. This is what most tools on page one do, and it is the fastest way to find out whether you like Japandi more than mid-century.

Settling on a direction before spending anything. Not for deciding what to buy, because the pieces are painted, not specified.

Where the numbers come from

Guessed. A single photo carries no measurements, so the furniture is drawn to look right in the frame, not sized to the room.

02

Restyle a photo with products you can buy

Same starting point, a photo of the room, but the redesign is assembled from real products in a catalogue, so you can click through to the sofa you see. Havenly does this free, on the web and in its iOS app.

Shopping a look you already like. Measure the wall and the doorway yourself before ordering anything large.

Where the numbers come from

Real products, guessed fit. The sofa exists and has a price; whether it fits the wall it is standing against is still judged from a photo.

03

Design from the floor plan

You start from the plan instead of a photo: generate one from a description, or trace one you already have. The furniture is then chosen against real wall runs, walkways and door swings, and anything that does not clear is left out rather than drawn smaller.

A room you are actually going to furnish, where a sofa that is fifteen centimetres too long is a return shipment, not a detail.

Where the numbers come from

Measured, from the plan. The render comes last, built from the products that passed the fit check.

The AI room design tools on page one, compared

Entry prices read off each vendor’s own page. Five of the six start from a photo; the one that starts from a floor plan is the only one that can measure the room.

If you want a look you can shop and do not need it measured, Havenly is the strongest free option here: every piece in its redesign is a real product. What it cannot do from a photo is tell you the sofa fits.

A room can look right in a picture and still not work, and the picture will not tell you

We tested this on our own work. For the four studio layouts elsewhere on this site, every room was arranged by eye first, then drawn to scale and checked for clearance. In two of the four, furniture stood where the front door opens.

Nothing looked wrong. The swing of a door is an arc of about ninety centimetres that no render shows unless it is told to, and a photo restyler has no way to know the door is there. That is the gap a floor plan closes: the arc is on the drawing, so the layout can respect it.

How Decato designs a room

It starts with the plan: generate one from a description, or trace one you already have — an agent’s listing image, a builder’s drawing, a photograph of a printed plan — and correct the walls by hand wherever they matter. Then you set the style and the budget.

After that those numbers are the truth everything is measured against. Furniture is matched to real in-stock products and refused if it does not clear the walkways and the door swings, and what comes back is a priced list rather than a picture to interpret.

The render comes last and is built from the products that passed, so what you see is what you can order. Mac and Windows; planning runs free on your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini key.

Common questions

Can Decato redesign a room from a photo?

No. Decato starts from the floor plan, not a photograph: you generate a plan from a description or trace one you already have. If you want a photo restyled in seconds, RoomGPT, room-designer.ai or Havenly will do that. Decato is for the step after, when the room has to be furnished with things that fit.

Is there a free AI room design tool?

Yes. Havenly’s AI redesign is free on the web and in its iOS app, and most photo restylers give free credits to start. Decato is free for planning and layout on your own ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini key; matching real products and renders start at $20 a month (Checked September 2026).

Why does a floor plan matter more than a photo?

A photo shows how a room looks, not how big it is. Any tool working from one picture has to guess the length of the wall behind the sofa and the width of the door it comes through. A floor plan carries those numbers, so a layout built on it can check the fit instead of drawing it to look right.

Are the products in AI room designs real?

In most photo restylers, no: the furniture is painted to match the style and does not exist as a product. Havenly is the exception, assembling its redesign from a real catalogue. In Decato every piece is an in-stock product with a price and a link, and it is only placed if it fits (Checked September 2026).

What do I get at the end?

A layout on your real floor plan, a render built from the products in it, and a priced shopping list whose rows open the shop page for each piece. It runs on a Mac; a Windows version is planned.
